It is during this time between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice that personal preparation for the annual Sundance Ceremony intensifies.  During the Sun dance, people of all ages enter into the sacred Arbor and Cry to the sun; praying for the health and prosperity of the community.  At this time, men give offerings of the body by pinning themselves to the tree and women, who already give blood, give offerings of the flesh as prayers.  It took me years to become accustomed to this practice.  I had a genetic belief that God wanted us to suffer.  The more one suffered, the more spiritual one was.  I have longed ago healed this belief.  The only thing praying for suffering does is create more suffering.  Does it follow, then, that one who pierces the self to a tree through the flesh, or drags buffalo skulls around the abor, or cuts skin from the arm, can embrace a belief  that does not include suffering? Yes!  I personally witnessed two men get pierced through the chest and  watched as the pins broke and fell out to the ground. They hadn’t been tied to the tree, yet.  One was the medicine man who facilitated the ceremony and the other my mentor.  In the case of the medicine man, they sent for another set of pins.  They pierced him a second time, and again the pins broke and fell off his chest!  That did it for me! Such a dramatic testimony for me, that when one is in harmony with All that Is, suffering ceases to be.

Here’s to all those dancers  and their supporters preparing for Hanbleciya (Vision Quest); prayers for health, freedom, and release from suffering for the people.  While I have completed my commitment, I still move in preparation to pray  at sun dance time for the communities in which I live and walk. I guess once a dancer, always a dancer. Here is  a Sun dance Song from cetanlusahan .
 Peace!
